Adopt a Basset Hound

Basset Hound

Thank you for considering adopting a rescued basset hound! Our dogs have come from a multitude of situations and we strive to match each of our special hounds with a forever home in which they will thrive.

All of our bassets arrive and spend their time in our rescue in one of two special homes. During their hopefully brief time in their foster home, we evaluate each bassets’ medical needs and provide any treatment required, we determine the basset’s personality, special needs and the challenges the forever family will face and match the basset and family in what we strive to be a wonderful pairing for both hound and family.

The adoption process is initiated by completing the adoption application either on line or by printing out a copy and mailing it to our rescue headquarters. Depending upon the number of applications being received and other important factors, it can take a week or so for your application to be processed. We process all applications in the order in which they are received. If you have not heard from us within a week please send us an email to make certain there were no problems in us receiving it.

At a minimum, we will check all references and will have a telephone interview with you. We may also have an in home visit with you. After that process is completed and you are approved, we will send you an email indicating when you will be able to meet with your prospective family member. If we don’t have the right basset for you, we’ll keep your application on file and notify you as we receive new bassets that might be a good match for you. We also encourage you to keep in touch with us by email.

We require an adoption donation be made to Basset Rescue of Florida, the amount of which depends upon the age of the basset you adopt. The donations are as follows:

Under 6 months - $300.00
6 months to 1 year - $250.00
1+ year to 3 years - $200.00
3+ years to 5 years - $175.00
5+ years to 7 years - $150.00
7+ years to 10 years - $125.00
10+ years - waived to approved home

Your basset will be adopted to you with current vaccinations, already spayed/neutered, treated for internal and external parasites, and will have been tested for heartworm and will be current on heartworm preventative. Many of the bassets will also come with a microchip. All of the hounds will have been assessed for temperament and treated for any known pre-existing medical conditions. All dogs adopted from Basset Rescue of Florida are required to be maintained on monthly heartworm preventative and flea/tick preventative.

We love our potential adopters to be informed about basset hounds and their personality traits. Bassets are often perceived as “lazy” and “slow” dogs that are “couch potatoes”. That perception often renders bassets homeless as an owner discovers that they are capable of almost any typical canine behavior and can be just as mischievous as any other breed. They may be short but they can grab a steak off the counter as fast as any Great Dane! They may appear to be slow and lazy but chasing one down the street will change your mind quickly! The more informed you are about the breed characteristics, the happier you will be with your new family member. We encourage everyone to do as much research as possible about this breed before making the decision to adopt.

Thanks for considering adopting from our rescue and we look forward to finding you a wonderful new family member.
